History

In the year 1907, Sr. Baptista Battig, OSB, a missionary Benedictine Sister and a concert pianist from Germany, founded the St. Scholastica School of Music, pioneering the formal music education in the Philippines.  Her vision was to see the children of the East rise to the level of the children of the West.

In the same spirit, aiming to produce musicians from the rank of the youth, five alumnae of St. Scholastica’s College (four of whom are music majors) came together and set up the Sister Baptista Music Foundation, Inc. (SBBMFI) named after the foundress  of the school to continue Sister Baptista’s endeavor and pursue her dreams for the youth of our times.

The five alumnae were Sr. Mary Placid Abejo, OSB, Ms. Soledad Maramba,
Ms. Amada Katigbak, Mrs. Cristina Carreon-Bichara and Leonor Garcia-Berroya.  They envisioned that through the foundation, they could provide talented but financially disadvantaged youth the benefit of the same quality of music education they themselves had enjoyed.

Inspired by this dream, they hollowed out from their own pockets and prevailed upon their friends and relatives to help and donate for this purpose and on October 28, 1991, the foundation was formally incorporated.

Named after Sister Baptista Battig, OSB  - the founder of the Conservatory of Music of St. Scholastica’s College which pioneered music education in the Philippines.

Inspired to pursue the dream of Sr. Baptista Battig: “Great is my desire to see the dear children of the East rise in the musical world to the same level as those of the west. May all my earnest endeavors bear fruit and lead to a plentiful harvest and may my profound desire be realized someday”.
